The Story

This rare hybrid Anthurium is an eye-catching addition to any collection. It is prized for its compact growth and easygoing nature, both of which the hybridisation of these species has promoted. Its glossy, pebble-textured leaves are a lush mid-green, with newer leaves sporting a standout bronze tint. This plant likes high humidity so may grow best in a large terrarium or glass cabinet, but it can also do well in a grouped planting. Make sure it gets bright, indirect light to keep its embossed-looking foliage healthy and its glossy foliage will stand out amongst your collection.

Scientific Name
Anthurium luxurians × radicans (flower-tail, luxuriant species hybridised with radiating species)

A. radicans was first identified in 1855; the first time A. luxurians was published was 2005.

Common Name
Luxurians-Radicans Hybrid Anthurium, Textured Anthurium, Collector’s Anthurium

Origin
A. radicans is native to eastern Brazil; A. luxurians is native to Colombia. Both grow in tropical rainforests.

Light
Keep this Anthurium in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, but make sure the light is bright enough to easily read by to keep the plant's growth healthy.

Water
Make sure the top inch or so of soil dries between waters; this plant's roots are naturally epiphytic so nees air circulation as well as water to stay healthy. Make sure the soil is lightly moist but never soggy. Reduce watering in winter and use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the roots.

Humidity
This plant will grow best in high humidity like the rainforest it parent plants are adapted to. It will grow well in a damp bathroom, in a glass terrarium or cabinet, or with the help of a pebble tray to keep that humidity around the ideal 60-80%.

Soil
A mix designed for epiphytes like Anthuriums and Orchids will work well. Make sure it has plenty of bark for aeration and drainage. Repot every three years or so when absolutely necessary, when the plant has outgrown the pot.

Food
Feed every couple of weeks in spring and summer, reduce to every month in autumn and winter. Roots are sensitive so take care with fertilisers which pour directly into the soil.

Temperature
Likes warmer temperatures, must stay between 12-28°C

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
The key with this one is moisture in the right places- it does not like soggy roots but does like high humidity, so try misting it or introducing a humidity tray rather than watering into the soil every time!
